Bluffing in Pot Limit Texas Hold em
Anyone who knows anything about
Texas Hold em is familiar with the concept of bluffing. A bluff is a big bet designed to get opponents to fold a stronger hand than the one you have. Bluffing is used in all forms of poker, but in some forms it is more effective than others. In limit poker, bluffing is less effective since the player you are trying to bluff knows he can only lose a certain amount, usually considerably less than his entire stack. Bluffing is most effective in no limit Texas Hold em, where you can put a player to a decision for all his chips at once. In between falls pot limit bluffing, where you can only bet the amount of the pot at any time.
Avoid bluffing weak players
It is very difficult to bluff weak players in pot limit Texas Hold em. Before the flop, and even on the flop, the bet sizes are limited enough that most weak players will want to take a chance with any kind of hand. By the time the turn comes, the weak player will have invested so much that he will probably feel pot committed and call you even if he thinks he is beaten. You are better off playing these players in a straightforward manner, raising with premium hands and letting them call you down with the worst of it. In a tournament, you may be able to bluff a weaker player if you can put them to a decision for all their chips because their stack has gotten short. If their tournament life is on the line, they may fold to a bluff.
Easier to bluff strong poker players
Strong players can be bluffed more easily in a pot limit Texas Hold em game. You need to set up the action so that it is very likely that you have the hand you are representing, because even strong players can call you down in a pot limit game if they can put you on a high enough probability of bluffing. If a strong player is convinced you have hit your straight or flush, they will fold, even if the bet is not for their entire stack.
Rely on your read of your opponents to decide whether they can be bluffed, and only do so when the situation is right. If you can do this, you will have added a powerful weapon to your poker arsenal. This will certainly help you collect more chips in your games.
